Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
