Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
